PFAS in Bedding and Bed Sheets: What the Label Cannot Tell You (2026)
Every health, testing and regulatory claim below is sourced to the US Environmental Protection Agency, California and Minnesota statute, New York State guidance, peer-reviewed studies indexed on PubMed, published laboratory testing, OEKO-TEX or UL Solutions, current as of July 2026. TL;DR: PFAS in Bedding, at a Glance
- Plain sheets are mostly fine. In one round of testing, one of eight sheet sets came back positive, and only three of those eight were sold as stain or water resistant in the first place. The problem concentrates in treated items.
- Comforters and mattress protectors are where it lives. Four of four comforters and four of seven mattress pads tested positive in the same round, and nearly every item in those two categories was sold on a stain or water resistance claim.
- The fiber label is structurally blind to it. PFAS is a finish, not a fiber. A set can be honestly labeled 100 percent cotton and still be treated.
- One phrase predicts it better than anything on the tag: stain resistant. In the peer-reviewed data, targeted PFAS showed up only in items carrying water or stain-resistance claims.
- Green labels did not help. The researchers found that green assurances do not consistently indicate the absence of PFAS.
If you own ordinary cotton sheets, you can relax a little. The honest headline on PFAS in bedding is not that your bed is poisoning you. It is that the risk sits in a specific and predictable subset of what a bedding aisle sells, and the information you would need to avoid it is not printed anywhere on the product.
That second half is the part worth your time. Most writing on this topic goes straight to the scary chemistry. The more useful story is a labeling one, and I ran into it by building a tool that reads clothing labels for a living. Here is what testing found in bedding, why your sheet tag was never going to disclose it, and the one word on a package that tells you more than fiber content ever will.
Why a Sheet Label Cannot Tell You About PFAS
We built FiberCheck to read care and content labels, and we ship a dedicated home textile mode for exactly this category: sheets, pillows, towels, curtains. Building that mode is how the gap became obvious to me.
A content label is a declaration of fiber. Cotton, polyester, lyocell, percentages, done. PFAS is not a fiber. It is a finish applied to the surface of a finished textile to make liquids bead up and roll off. The two facts live in different layers of the product, so they never contradict each other. A stain-resistant sheet set that says 100 percent cotton is telling the truth. It is simply answering a question you did not ask.
Our home textile analysis leans hard on flame retardants and composition, the classic worries in this category. PFAS slips past that lens the same way it slips past the tag, because no label read, ours included, conjures information the manufacturer never disclosed. So the practical move is not to squint harder at fiber content. It is to read the marketing.
Fiber versus finish, in one line
Fiber content is on the sewn-in tag and mandatory. The finish is in the packaging copy and voluntary. Read only the mandatory part and you systematically miss what you were checking for.
What Testing Actually Found in Bedding
Two bodies of testing carry the weight here, and they agree in a way worth noticing. The first is the Toxic Convenience study published in January 2022 by Toxic-Free Future, a nonprofit advocacy organization. Worth flagging the advocacy framing up front, because it shaped the shopping list without limiting it: of the 20 bedding items tested, 13 were labeled stain or water resistant and seven carried no such claim. The 20 broke down as four comforters, seven mattress pads or covers, and nine sheets or pillowcases.
By type, all four comforters contained PFAS, and all four were labeled stain or water resistant. Four of the seven mattress pads or protectors contained PFAS, and six of the seven were labeled. Only one of eight sheet sets tested positive, a set of pillow protectors marketed as Teflon treated, and only three of those eight sheet sets were marketed as stain or water resistant at all. Their summary lines: PFAS in nine of the 13 bedding items marketed as stain or water resistant, and none of the items without such claims tested above their screening level for fluorine. One note on their arithmetic, since the categories do not sum cleanly. The summary counts nine sheets or pillowcases, while the sheets section describes eight sheet sets including one crib sheet and one set of pillow protectors. I am quoting their numbers as written rather than reconciling them for them.
The methods page is more transparent than most advocacy testing, which is why I am willing to lean on it. Total fluorine screening ran at Galbraith Laboratories in Tennessee with a detection limit of 10 parts per million for most items, compound-specific work ran at Eurofins in Sweden by UPLC/MS/MS, and concentrations of a total of 51 PFAS were measured. Twenty bedding items is still a small sample. Named labs and named methods are worth more than an unattributed number.
Read the shape of that, not just the totals. Sheets are the layer least likely to be treated in the first place, three of eight in this basket, and they came back almost clean. Comforters and mattress protectors, the items sold on spill protection, were treated almost across the board and came back mostly positive. Not a random scatter across the bedroom. It tracks the finish, which is also why the clean result on untreated bedding matters as much as the positives.
The second body of evidence is peer reviewed. According to Rodgers and colleagues in Environmental Science and Technology (2022), whose title asks how well product labels indicate the presence of PFAS, 93 products used by children and adolescents were tested across bedding, furnishings and clothing. Silent Spring Institute, which ran the work, reports that 54 of the 93 contained detectable fluorine, and that PFAS were detected most frequently in upholstered furniture, clothing and pillow protectors, with pillow protectors and clothing carrying higher levels than other categories.

The One Word That Predicts It
The single most useful finding in the whole subject comes straight out of the Rodgers paper: targeted PFAS were detected only in products labeled as water and/or stain-resistant.
Sit with how strong that is. Not correlated with. Not more common in. Only in. The marketing claim, written to sell you the product, turned out to be the best available disclosure of the chemistry.
The same paper closes off the escape hatch most shoppers reach for. Its authors report that green assurances do not consistently indicate the absence of PFAS among water and stain-resistant items. A comforter can be sold as eco, natural or non-toxic and still be finished. That adjective is not regulated the way fiber content is.
Which gives you a rule that survives an actual store. Treat any spill, stain, water or mess claim on bedding as a disclosure. Treat green, natural and non-toxic as decoration until somebody names a chemistry.
Does It Get Into You While You Sleep?
Here is where I have to be careful, because this is the question everyone actually came for and the evidence does not fully answer it.
What is documented is that skin is a real route. According to Ragnarsdottir and colleagues in Environment International (2024), who tested 17 PFAS on 3D human skin equivalent models, the absorbed fraction reached 58.9 percent for perfluoropentanoic acid and 48.7 percent for perfluorobutane sulfonate. Absorption fell as carbon chain length rose, while the longer chains instead lodged in the skin tissue itself, with perfluoroundecanoic acid at 66.5 percent and perfluorononane sulfonate at 68.3 percent detected within the tissue.
Note the direction as well as the numbers. Absorption ran highest for the shortest chains, which inverts the intuition that the legacy long-chain compounds are the ones to watch on skin. PFBS in particular is one of the short-chain substitutes industry moved to after PFOS was phased out. What the study does not tell you is which of these ends up on a finished textile: it applied a panel of PFAS to skin models, it did not survey what manufacturers apply to a duvet.
There is a counterweight I should put on the table rather than quietly leave out. According to Yeh and colleagues in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology (2025), who reviewed the studies that directly measured PFOA absorption in human skin, the recommended value is 1.6 percent fractional absorption under finite dose conditions, and their results indicate low dermal absorption of PFOA relative to ingestion. Read it with its own disclosure in view. The paper states that two of its authors have served as experts in PFAS litigation, that their employer has been involved in several PFAS litigation and non-litigation matters, and that some of the underlying research was done during those engagements and was sponsored by the defendant. I am citing it anyway, because a review cutting against the alarming reading belongs in the picture, and because PFOA is a long-chain compound, the class that absorbs least.
And now the honest part. Both of those studies applied measured doses to skin or skin models in a lab. Nobody has measured how much PFAS migrates from a mattress protector into a person over eight hours of sleep. I have looked, and if that study exists I have not found it. Anyone quoting you a nightly exposure figure for bedding is doing arithmetic on assumptions, not reporting a measurement.
What the exposure story does have is a general shape. According to the EPA, PFAS are manufactured chemicals used since the 1940s, and many break down very slowly and can build up in people, animals, and the environment over time. The agency lists stain and water-repellent used on carpets, upholstery, clothing, and other fabrics among exposure sources, and says exposure to certain levels of PFAS may lead to effects including reduced ability of the body's immune system to fight infections, developmental effects or delays in children, and increased risk of some cancers.
Those health findings come from PFAS exposure generally, not from bedding studies, and I am not going to launder a body-burden literature into a claim about your duvet. The defensible position: the chemistry clears slowly, treated bedding is one contributor among many, and dropping an avoidable contributor is reasonable without a scare attached.
What the Law Now Says, and What It Does Not Fix
Bedding is not an afterthought in the current wave of textile rules. In two states it is named in the statute. California AB 1817 defines textile articles as goods customarily used in households and businesses, listing apparel, accessories, handbags, backpacks, draperies, shower curtains, furnishings, upholstery, beddings, towels, napkins and tablecloths. Beddings, right there in the statute. The prohibition on regulated PFAS took effect January 1, 2025, and the threshold, written in the statute as a measurement of total organic fluorine, drops from 100 to 50 parts per million on January 1, 2027. Under Minnesota Statutes section 116.943, known as Amara's Law, textile furnishings covers goods including but not limited to draperies, floor coverings, furnishings, bedding, towels, and tablecloths, and sale of those goods with intentionally added PFAS has been prohibited since January 1, 2025.
Now the part that gets flattened in most coverage. These laws are not interchangeable. New York's is written around apparel, and the state's own guidance defines apparel as clothing items intended for regular wear or formal occasions, listing undergarments, shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and so on. Bedding is not in that list. Any roundup that lumps New York in with California and Minnesota on bedding is wrong.
Even where bedding is covered, the protection is narrower than it sounds. These laws govern sale, not possession, so the treated protector you bought in 2021 is untouched. They are state laws, so what reaches a shelf depends on where the shelf is. And a parts-per-million threshold caps content rather than promising zero. Useful floor, not a finish line.
What Certification Marks Actually Cover
According to OEKO-TEX, STANDARD 100 certifies that every thread, button and accessory have been tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances, with product classes graded by intensity of skin contact. Bedding lands in Product Class 2, products with direct skin contact, which the standard illustrates with bed linens. Class 1 covers products for babies and children up to 3 years and is the strictest.
PFAS is not named on that overview page, which is where most write-ups stop and conclude the mark says nothing about it. That conclusion is out of date. In a 2024 regulations release, OEKO-TEX states that a new limit value of 100 mg/kg affects STANDARD 100, ECO PASSPORT, LEATHER STANDARD and ORGANIC COTTON as of January 1, 2024, that it has replaced the extractable organic fluorine method with total fluorine, and that the update enables all OEKO-TEX certifications to remain compliant with the US regulations on PFAS. There is a fluorine ceiling behind the mark, and the number matches the 100 ppm California used before its 2027 step down. The two are not measuring quite the same thing, though. OEKO-TEX screens total fluorine, while the California threshold is written as total organic fluorine, so the same figure sits on a slightly wider measurement.
One certification does deserve a correction, because bedding shoppers reach for it constantly. GREENGUARD is not a PFAS standard. According to UL Solutions, certified products are screened for more than 15,000 VOCs known to pollute indoor air, and the Gold tier adds lower emission limits plus compliance with a California Department of Public Health standard method. That is an air-emissions program, and PFAS content is not among the criteria described there. A GREENGUARD Gold mattress can be excellent on off-gassing and tell you nothing about a stain finish.
So STANDARD 100 is evidence about substances in the fabric, GREENGUARD is evidence about the air in the room, and neither is a written answer from the brand about the finish. That answer is still the thing worth asking for.
How to Actually Buy Bedding
Four steps, ordered by how much they change the outcome.
Skip the performance claim, not the fiber
Stain resistant, spill proof, water repellent, easy care next to a photo of a liquid. Passing on that claim removes most of the risk here in one decision, and costs you a feature you probably would not have used.
Prioritize by layer, not by panic
Testing keeps pointing at mattress protectors, comforters and pillow protectors, and keeps mostly clearing plain sheets. Replace one thing, replace the waterproof protector. Leave the cotton flat sheet alone.
Ask one specific question
Not is this non-toxic, which invites a marketing answer. Ask whether it carries a durable water repellent or stain-release finish, and if so what chemistry. A brand that genuinely moved off fluorinated finishes answers fast. Vagueness is itself an answer.
Use certifications and dates as tiebreakers
A STANDARD 100 Class 2 mark is a real screen with a total fluorine ceiling behind it. GREENGUARD is not, whatever the shelf talker implies. Recent manufacture helps too, given that California and Minnesota have both prohibited PFAS in bedding sold there since January 2025. None of it is a guarantee, and all of it beats guessing.
Standing in a shop with a plastic-wrapped bedding set, most of this is hard to work out. The summary I would give a friend: your plain cotton sheets are not the problem, the waterproof protector under them might be, and the fiber tag will never tell you which. Buy bedding that does not promise to repel anything, and you have handled most of this without thinking about chemistry again.

The reliable tell is the marketing language. In the peer-reviewed Rodgers study of 93 children's products, targeted PFAS were detected only in products labeled as water and/or stain-resistant. Read the sales copy on the box, not just the fiber tag.
Is PFAS in bedding absorbed through the skin?
Skin absorption of PFAS is real, but no study has measured how much moves from a bed sheet into a sleeping person, and this article will not pretend otherwise. Treat it as a broad screen with a fluorine ceiling, not a zero-PFAS guarantee. GREENGUARD is a different thing, a VOC emissions program that does not address PFAS content.
