Is Polyester Bad for Your Skin? What Actually Causes the Irritation (2026)

The short answer
For most people, no. Polyester is a chemically stable plastic fibre. It does not break down on your skin, and it does not react with you the way a fragrance, a nickel snap or a rubber waistband can. If you have worn polyester for years and never thought about it, nothing here should change that.
But "polyester is safe" and "polyester feels fine on me" are two different statements. Plenty of people do itch in synthetics, and they are not imagining it. In almost every case the cause is one of four things, and only one of them is a true allergy:
Heat and moisture trapped against the skin.
Friction from a tight synthetic weave.
Finishing chemicals and loose dye still sitting in a new garment.
A genuine allergy to disperse dyes, which affects a small minority.
Each one has a different fix. Working out which is yours decides whether you need a looser shirt, a different wash routine, or a dermatologist.
Polyester Is Not a Common Allergen, and That Matters
This is the most useful fact in the topic. According to DermNet, although all textile fibres can cause reactions, "it is rare for them to cause allergic contact dermatitis." The allergy, when there is one, is usually to what was added to the fabric during processing: formaldehyde finishing resins, dyes, glues and other chemical additives.
That distinction runs through everything below. The fibre is the carrier. The chemistry sitting on the fibre is what your immune system actually sees. It is the same argument I made in Is Rayon Bad for Your Skin?, and it holds even better for polyester, because polyester is more inert than regenerated cellulose is.
So the honest framing is not "polyester is bad for skin." It is closer to "polyester creates the conditions in which other things bother your skin."
What Actually Makes Polyester Feel Itchy
Heat, Trapped Moisture and Friction
Polyester does not absorb water into the fibre the way cotton does. Performance fabrics move sweat along the surface and evaporate it, which works well when air is moving over you and badly in a tight shirt under a jacket, when sweat sits in a warm film against your skin.
Warm, damp, occluded skin is more permeable and more easily irritated. It is also more reactive if you already have eczema. The American Academy of Dermatology, in its atopic dermatitis skin care guidance, puts it plainly: "When you get overheated and sweat, the sweat can also trigger a flare-up." Notice that the trigger there is sweat and heat, not the fibre name on the label.
I test this on myself with one swap: same activity, same day, a looser garment in the same fibre. If the itch drops, the problem was heat and fit, not chemistry.
Cheap polyester jersey can be slightly abrasive, and tight synthetic knits move against skin rather than with it. Repeated rubbing damages the outer skin barrier mechanically, which is why irritation tends to show up exactly where clothes press hardest.
The map is telling. DermNet notes that the areas most often affected by textile dermatitis are "the crooks of the arm, backs of the knees, armpits, groin area and buttocks; places that are in most contact with the clothing." Those are friction and occlusion zones, not random patches. If your rash respects the outline of a waistband or a bra band, mechanics are involved.
Finishes, Dyes and What Is Left in a New Garment
A new garment is not just fibre. It carries whatever survived dyeing, softening, wrinkle-resist and anti-odour treatment. Formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resistant finishes are a recognised cause of clothing dermatitis, and they are applied to blends including polyester-cotton.
This is the category that responds best to the cheapest intervention there is, which is washing the thing before you wear it. If your reaction happens with new clothes and fades after a few washes, you were reacting to residue, not to polyester.
Certification puts a floor under something you cannot see. OEKO-TEX states that in a STANDARD 100 certified article, "every thread, button and accessory have been tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances," and it sorts products into four classes by how much skin contact they get, with the strictest limits reserved for baby articles. A certified polyester shirt and an uncertified one are not the same product from a skin point of view.

Disperse Dye Dermatitis, the Real Allergy
This is the one that is a genuine allergy, and it is worth knowing.
Disperse dyes are the dye class used on synthetic fibres. DermNet's textile dye allergy page explains that synthetic fibres such as polyester and acrylic are coloured with them, and that "disperse blue 106 and disperse blue 124 used in a variety of clothing are common causes of contact dermatitis." Those two were named Contact Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2000, which tells you how established the pattern is.
The mechanism matters. Disperse dyes are not chemically bonded into the fibre the way reactive dyes bond into cotton. They sit in it and can migrate out, especially with heat, sweat and rubbing, which is why the presentation is so specific. DermNet describes dermatitis that "usually occurs in the areas that come into contact with clothing" and is "often worse in areas where there is constant rubbing with the fabric and sweating," with the waistband area, upper thighs and buttocks commonly involved.
How common is it? A 2023 study of 209 patients patch tested at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, published in Contact Dermatitis, found that 54 of them (25.8%) tested positive to the textile dye mix or an individual textile dye, and that 28 of those 54 (51.9%) had a clinically relevant reaction. Read the population carefully before you carry that number anywhere. Every one of those patients was referred because textile dye allergy was already suspected, so the figure says how often the suspicion is confirmed, not how common the allergy is in the general public.
If you suspect this in yourself, the answer is patch testing, not guesswork. Textile dye mix sits in standard patch test panels in many clinics, and a positive result changes what you buy for years. In the meantime, DermNet's interim advice is that "all new clothing should be washed at least 3 times prior to wearing to get rid of excess un-bound dyes," and to favour light-coloured garments, since less dye means less to migrate.
Polyester, Sweat, Acne and Body Odour
Two questions get mixed together here. Take them separately.
Odour is real and measured. A study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology put 26 healthy people through an intensive spinning session in cotton and polyester T-shirts, then analysed the shirts. As the published results put it, "the polyester T-shirts smelled significantly less pleasant and more intense, compared to the cotton T-shirts," and micrococci "were isolated in almost all synthetic shirts" while being nearly absent from cotton. Fibre choice shifts which bacteria grow on your clothes, and that shifts how they smell.
Acne is more indirect. There is no good evidence that polyester itself is comedogenic. What the fabric does is hold heat and press against skin, and heat plus occlusion plus friction is the recognised recipe for the mechanical form of acne you see under sports bra bands, backpack straps, helmet straps and tight collars. The fix follows the mechanism rather than the fibre: looser fit, shower and change promptly after sweating, and never re-wear a damp synthetic top. Swapping to cotton in the same tight cut often changes very little.
Who Should Be More Careful
Most readers can stop worrying here. A few groups should adjust.
People with atopic dermatitis or eczema
A damaged skin barrier lets more of everything through, and heat is an independent trigger. The AAD's own list is specific: wear loose-fitting 100% cotton, avoid tight clothing, never wear wool next to skin, wash new clothes before wearing them, and use fragrance-free, dye-free detergent.
People with psoriasis or hidradenitis suppurativa
Both are aggravated by friction and occlusion in the same flexural areas where synthetic clothing sits tightest.
Heavy sweaters and anyone in a hot climate
The problem is dwell time. A damp synthetic layer worn for ten hours behaves differently from one worn for forty minutes.
Anyone with a known textile dye allergy
This is the one group for whom fibre choice really is the lever, because disperse dyes are used on synthetic fibres rather than on cotton or linen.
Infants and small children

How to Buy and Wash Polyester So It Stops Bothering You
None of this is exotic. It is the boring stuff that works.
Wash before first wear, every time. For most people once is enough. If you have a confirmed dye allergy, follow the three-wash advice.
Buy looser. Fit changes irritation more than fibre content does for the majority of people.
Prefer certified fabric for next-to-skin layers. Underwear, base layers, leggings and sleepwear are where a STANDARD 100 label earns its keep.
Choose lighter colours for high-friction garments. Less dye load in the waistband and thigh area means less to migrate when you sweat.
Use fragrance-free, dye-free detergent and rinse fully. Detergent residue often gets blamed on the fabric.
Skip anti-wrinkle and anti-odour finishes if you are reactive. That is added chemistry sitting on the fibre surface.
Do not re-wear damp synthetics. Odour and irritation both compound.
Be sceptical of a vague "polyester blend" label. It hides the ratio, and the ratio changes how the garment behaves in heat.

When It Is Not the Fabric
Some patterns point away from clothing entirely, and they are worth ruling out before you rebuild your wardrobe.
Rule These Out Before You Blame the Shirt
If the rash sits on skin your clothes never touch, clothing is unlikely to be the cause. If it started after a new detergent, fabric softener, deodorant or body wash, start there. If it is scaly, well-defined and persistent, or if it is spreading, weeping or painful, that is a clinician's job rather than a fabric question. Anything with swelling of the lips, face or throat, or with breathing difficulty, is urgent care. And a rash that does not settle within a couple of weeks of removing the suspected garment deserves patch testing rather than another round of guessing.

Can polyester make eczema worse?
